Reports to: Artistic Director, Education and Theatre for Change

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Status: Full-time, includes occasional evening and weekend hours

Location: Hybrid during the school year (Bethesda, MD; remote 2 days per week; on location

with community partners)

JOB SUMMARY

Imagination Stage seeks a Theatre for Change Manager . Under the direction of the Artistic

Director for Education and Theatre for Change, this individual will join a team responsible for

growing Imagination Stage’s Theatre for Change programs both artistically and in terms of

community reach, buy-in, and funding support from a $350,000 to $2,000,000 program in five

years. Ideal candidates will possess experience in applied theater; partnership development and

management; new play development and social justice and grassroots organizing. Candidates

must also be willing to have a flexible work schedule.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Using theatre productions and educational workshops to bridge cultural divides and lift up

underrepresented voices, Imagination Stage’s Theatre for Change program explores complex

social justice issues to help build a new generation of compassionate, collaborative children who

are capable of changing the world. Whether telling the story of refugee children fleeing violence

in Central America (¡Oyeme!) or developing positive relationships between children and police

(10 Seconds), Imagination Stage addresses the crucial needs of our community through applied

theater arts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning

● Participate in organization-wide season and program planning

● Seek relationships to grow the Theatre for Change work locally as well as opportunities for

national exposure

● Assist in finding new grant opportunities that align with our goals and collaborate with the

Development Department as needed

● Explore new educational partnership opportunities for Theatre for Change expansion ranging

from schools systems to Health and Human Services departments to correctional facilities

Curriculum and Program Development

● Develop curriculum-aligned modules for 10 Seconds and other Theatre for Change programs

● Co-lead and organize professional development training for educators and police departments

around 10 Seconds

● Create and lead workshops across Theatre for Change program areas including programming

with incarcerated youth and migrant youth

● Hire, train, and evaluate teaching artists across Theatre for Change programs

● Meet with new partners and adapt Theatre for Change programs to meet their goals while

maintaining programmatic integrity

● Collaborate with the Artistic Director for Education and Theatre for Change and an outside

evaluation firm on impact studies of our Theatre for Change programming

Artistic

● With the Artistic Director of Education and Theatre for Change, dramaturg new Theatre for

Change scripts in development

● Assist with casting actors and hiring of designers, as well as contract creation for all Theatre

for Change productions

● With the Artistic Director for Education and Theatre for Change and Founding Artistic

Director, plan for future Theatre for Change shows with an eye towards new themes that are

in response to current events

Tour Management and Digital Distribution

● Manage and schedule performances of touring productions to local middle and high schools

as well as community groups

● Coordinate the production needs with the production stage manager

● Develop relationships with new community groups and schools and convert them to new

clients

● Lead post-show audience engagement activities as needed, evaluate the social emotional

goals of the workshops, and adjust as needed

● Host digital and live events around the screenings and live performances

Advocacy and Community Building

● Attend community forums and panels around issues of social justice

● Participate in the Theatre for Change Task Force

● Co-lead professional trainings for artist-educators to get involved with Theatre for Change

work

● Seek new artists (writers, designers, directors) to be involved with our professional Theatre

for Change tours

● Seek non-arts partners such as museums and universities to elevate our work

QUALIFICATIONS

● Experience in trauma-informed and healing-centered teaching utilizing applied theatre

techniques

● Experience in leading workshops with both teens and adults

● Producing, directing and/or playwriting experience is beneficial

● Fluency in another language besides English is beneficial

● Proven administrative and organizational skills

● Reliable non-public transportation is necessary

● Ability to create artistic work in non-traditional theatre spaces (for example: a school

cafeteria, library or prison)

● Clear understanding of—and passionate commitment to—arts for change

● Ability to work occasional evenings and weeks and to travel to various sites in the immediate

region

● Commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives and values

COMPENSATION

● Annual Salary: $50,000-$60,000
